This whirlwind class gives you a start at many different fiber arts. You’ll start with the sheep, learn to spin yarn and finish by learning the weaving skills to take you where-ever your passion leads you in fiber arts.
Total class cost $150 includes all materials, includes fibers, drop spindle and handouts. Tools and additional fiber – trilooms, small looms, spindles, spinning wheels, niddy-noddy's, hand cards and dyes will be available to use during class and may be available to purchase at the Ozark Folk Center Fiber Arts Shop.
Day One – Friday, August 9, 2019
Spinning, shearing, carding, fleece washing
- 9:00 - 10:00 Learn to spin on a drop spindle (you will continue to spin all day throughout the other sections)
- 10:00 - 12:00 Shearing sheep (wool) and angora goat (mohair); discuss other fibers angora, cotton, flax, chiengora, purrgora, quiviut, etc. Includes skirting and fleece sorting.
- 12:00 to 1:00 Lunch on your own (try the Smokehouse Snack Bar or Skillet Restaurant in the park)
- 1:00 Fleece washing on the outdoor stage
- 2:00 – visit our local yarn shop – the Fiber Arts Shop here at OFC
- 3:00 – Carding and blending
- 4:00 Wrap up for the day - homework - spin as much yarn as you can.
Day two – Saturday, August 10, 2019
Dyeing, dye types and uses, yarn types and uses
- 9:00 - 11:00 Dye roving and skeins with acid dyes and put in roaster.
- 11:00 - 12:00 Koolaid dyeing
- 12:00 to 1:00 Lunch on your own (try the Smokehouse Snack Bar or Skillet Restaurant in the park)
- 1:00 Natural dyeing bois d’arc; cochineal, madder
- 2:00 rinsing and drying
- 3:00 practice different spinning techniques for different yarn types, learn to ply
- 4:00 Wrap up for the day - homework - plan which of your yarns go together. Spin more yarn
Day three, Sunday, August 11, 2019
Weaving
- 9:00 to 10:00 Loom types and uses, loom tour of the spinning and weaving shop
- 10:00 to 12:00 learn to weave on the triangle loom, rigid heddle loom, cardboard loom, peg loom, etc. with practice yarn
- 12:00 to 1:00 Lunch
- 1:00 Felted soap with Linda Odom – pavilion by Kid’s Garden
- 2:00 Weaving and crochet techniques with your handspun yarn
- 3:00 to 4:00 Joining and finishing techniques. Wrap up and travel home safely.
Meet the Teacher
Jeanette Larson has been a fiber artist all her life, weaving the threads of her art through her careers in journalism and management. She has marketed her art through Renaissance Festivals, craft shows, boutiques and galleries since 1987. In 2006 the fates collaborated to send her to the Mountain View, Arkansas area and settle her as Craft Director at the Ozark Folk Center, where her passion for folk arts and people who use their hands to create has brought new life to the old ways.
