Ozark Folk School Stained Glass Workshop - July Flag Panel

Taught by Dona Sawyer

Make a 7" x 8” stained glass July Flag Panel in your choice of reds, whites, and blues.

Students will learn the Tiffany Method of stained glass which uses copper foil instead of lead. You will learn how to make a pattern, cut and grind glass, apply copper foil, solder and finish an 8” panel. You will be working with sharp glass, hot soldering iron and solder, and chemicals. Some manual dexterity is required. Wear appropriate clothing, no open-toed shoes. All tools and supplies will be provided. Come ready to work and make a beautiful piece of art!

Dona has been teaching Stained Glass classes for the Ozark Folk Center State Park since 2007. Her students enjoy her class and love making beautiful pieces of glass art that will grace their own homes.

Pre-registration is required two weeks prior to the beginning of class. This class is for students ages 16 and up. Call the park at 870-269-3854 for more information

Teacher Bio and Artist Statement

My name is Dona Sawyer and I am a stained glass and jewelry artist. I think I became an artist because I have been doing some kind of arts and crafts with my family since I was a little girl. I got away from it as I became an adult, but then I moved to Mountain View!  There is so much art of some kind or another here, that it is almost palpable. I live in the country and feel like I have found my little slice of heaven on earth here. The peaceful setting informs my artwork.

My stained glass style has grown from simple quilt squares to antique, architectural designs, custom designs, natural designs, and fused and slumped creations. I’m drawn to the architectural designs because I love antiques and old houses and buildings and feel like the stained glass that you find in them, on occasion, is like finding a treasure! The fused and slumped glass is just plain fun because you never know exactly what you are going to have when you open up the kiln! Recently, I’ve been making jewelry, shawl pins, buttons, etc. out of my leftover pieces of glass, so I don’t waste anything.

I really enjoy creating beautiful things and exploring different styles, design methods and alternative, creative techniques, the more challenging, the better!  I hope you enjoy my pieces as much as I do.
